Women in Bangladesh

Bangladesh is one of the few countries in the world where both the ruling and opposition political parties are run by women.
But this doesn’t paint the full picture of the country’s progress on women’s rights.

Many women are forced into prostitution or trafficked as though they are someone else’s property. Women in Bangladesh are still expected to provide a dowry to the family of their husband-to-be. And around 40% of Bangladeshi women are married by the age of 14 - like Zakhia.

Forgive me for throwing in another shameless plug for my feature on Dhaka’s Dalit women plus bits on education, sanitation, the caste system and access to the political arena.
