Here’s the benchmark, fellow eco-feminists…

The not-so-good Life

My attempt at recreating The Good Life in Coventry needs a little work.

A brief window of respite from the ice, snow and rain allowed me to dig up the rest of our efforts from the late summer sowing sesh. Everything in my square-foot garden had blurred into one so it was a game of Guess The Veg.

I stunted the growth of the carrots and parsnips by (more…)

Wasssssssssail?!!!!

Went to my first Wassail today.

It’s a winter tradition where Morris dancers gallivant around a tree, blessing the orchard in the hope of bumper crops and cider aplenty over the year ahead.

I tried some 8 or 9% organic cider at the shindig (more…)

Celeriac chips

Eating seasonal food’s a breeze, until it comes to all the lumpier, bumpier, gooier grub most people don’t know how to pronounce.
I don’t always know, so I’ve suffered dishes of slimy boiled eel because I didn’t know it needed to be skinned and let’s not forget the night my sister and I vomited half our bodyweight after I bought us wild boar from the Dorchester Show and cooked it rare.

Celeriac, however, is one thing I’ve mastered.

The Beast of Bubbenhall

It appears we have a big cat on the prowl in Cov.

We’ve had a series of sightings in and around woodland on Ryton Pools Country Park on the outskirts of the city.

If this was a dog print you'd expect to see claw marks but cats retract their claws

To my delight, some witnesses have described the beast as a “ginger panther”, (more…)

The “wow” factor

Glamour, glitz and the “wow” factor don’t come along that often in environment reporting.
But recently I met Da Feng, a Cov Uni car design student whose eco ideas really pack a punch.
This two-minute video shows a super sexy Jaguar concept car that carries a sleek electric “pod” snugly in the car’s central aisle between the two front seats and two back seats.

The idea is (more…)

UFO hits wind turbine

Radio 4’s Ed Stourton woke me up this morning with the wonderful question: “You’re suggesting…? You are not, I take it, suggesting there are flying cows, are you?!”
Ed was interviewing Dale Vince, founder of renewable energy firm Ecotricity, after one of his giant wind turbines was mangled in a mystery incident in the dead-of-night.

Is organic more environmentally friendly?

The organic debate was given a thorough going over on Radio 4’s Costing The Earth tonight.

blemished and boodiful!

blemished and boodiful!

The programme consulted pesticide championing farmer Robert Law, anti pesticide crusader Georgina Downs (who runs the UK pesticides campaign), Environment Minister Hilary Benn and Richard Bruce, a farmer who had used and promoted pesticides before becoming too ill to work.

A truly horrifying story was retold (more…)
